"Carry On Wayward Son" ~ Kansas | Fractal FM3 / FM9 / Axe-FX III Preset
Boaring and abuse of one of the best composition ever. Stop it please!
Can’t say I’ve been called that version of swine before 🤔 Certainly one of the best compositions ever, though!
Thanks very much. While recording via input the 3,the dry signal volume seems very low.SO the reamped track too is very low.Why is that?
Hmm...when you record the DI (via Input 3) alongside the processed track (via Input 1), that level should be incredibly quiet by design. When you send this DI track back into Input 1, it should sound exactly like the processed track [until you modify any parameters in there]. Are you saying that when you send the DI back to be reamped, it isn't processing the signal (sounding like the clean DI)? Or is the signal not matching the same output level/gain level? If the latter, I have found that within the DAW I may have the DI level set down too far (to not hear it back in the mix), & that will alter the reamped signal. When I have the DI at unity gain, it should play back thru the FM3 at the original signal/gain strength. I like having FM3-Edit open to make sure it's routed correctly, & without the latency of my DAW. Let me know what you run into, & I'll do my best to help!
@@guitarguru186 Thanks a lot for your response.I read through the manual & it seemed to have helped a but to get it up & running. Thanks a lot.
Ah wonderful! I’m glad you got it sorted out ^_^ Happy reamping!
@@guitarguru186 Yes to an extent it is sorted. However I can say it is not as user friendly like the Helix although the rock tones are unbeatable for sure.
Haven't worked with the Helix personally, but these days it really boils down to the user's interface preference. Everything sounds so good! I think of the Fractal stuff like a Windows/PC, where something like Helix or Quad Cortex are more like an Apple/iOs UI...I personally love the control of the Fractal stuff, but the learning curve is definitely greater!
the M-Comp and Filter, Wow! I think this is also applicable to acoustic guitars!
Absolutely! They’re all tools, the choice of application is yours ^_^ I certainly use both with acoustic presets!
hell yes where did you get score?
Thanks! For the guitar part, there’s a Steve Morse Songbook that has pretty decent accuracy for this one. For all of the other instruments (sans drums), I transcribed it by ear so that the band would agree to play it 😂
Nice 😊
Thank you! 🙏🏻
Very, very nice! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for watching! 🙏🏻 Hope this helps you start out the Fractal bass journey right 🤘🏻
Maybe a silly question, but can I use only the FX Loop return to add extra inputs to the signal chain? For example, using a Boss SY 1000 output to re FX Loop Return to add the synth sounds. Thanks in advance!
Hmm 🤔 Fascinating question! While I’ve never tried myself, I don’t see why that wouldn’t work if routed correctly…I’ll have to test it out! (If you get to it before I do, let me know!)
Cool sounds great
Thank you! Happy TalkBoxing 🎸
simply 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you! I'm hoping this helps everyone rock out a little harder with TalkBox tones ^_^
Awesome, sounds great, can't wait to try it. Thank you!
Thank you! Have a blast with it ^_^ I certainly have over the years!
Thank you sir
My pleasure! I hope this helps you rock some TalkBox tones in the near future \m/
I have the axe fx3 and have the expression pedal hooked to my fc-6. I have tried adding the wah block to my preset build. When I go to engage the wah the control knob on the wah block settings doesn’t move, but I can hear it making a wah type noise. Though it’s not as pronounced. The low end cuff is there but not the high filtered tone.
Hmm...make sure you're assigning the correct Modifier to the Control knob (ex. using FC 1 Pedal 1 if you're plugged into the first EXP Pedal port on your FC controller). It sounds like the pedal is engaged but not assigned to the place where your EXP Pedal is plugged in. There are a LOT of options when using the Axe-FX III, from the back of the unit to FC-6/12 ports, so it's good to set them, take note...then never ever unplug those cables [if you can] haha. Hope that helps! If not, send me an email with a photo of the Modifier/Block & I'll do my best to troubleshoot it.
Thanks Alex. I may try to reset and reconnect my FC-6 and see if that fixes it. The kicker is it works fine on all the presets inside the axe fx 3. Just not on the ones I created.
Interesting! Perhaps copy down/screenshot the modifiers of the presets it does work on, then see if they match up with what you have? I find that I’ll miss the tiniest little detail when working quickly, then I’ll see it back-to-back like that & think to myself, “of COURSE it’s that!”
Gracias Amigo
De nada!
Sweet, Alex. This is great. I've been using a Tom Hamilton Gift Of Tone preset from Fractal. It's pretty good but this will open some doors. I have quite a few bass IRs, some free some paid, that should fit in nicely with your tips for dialing in some very usable bass tones.
Awesome! So happy to hear this will work well for you ^_^ Hoping this sort of thing generates more materials for bassists using Fractal units! (Also the last standing free preset, as of this comment!)
Have you tried IR in parallel with direct signal and blending?
Excellent idea! I think I did this once or twice (I used to do it outside the Fractal a lot more), but never really gave it much thought or care. I should go back to testing that approach out 🤔 Thank you for the suggestion!
@@guitarguru186 Fishman touts that with their Aura Spectrum D.I. I have the AXE III and struggle a bit with Acoustic - using pretty much your setup but I've pulled IR our of chain for live - I think I will try my own suggestion....duh! :)
That’s actually the unit I was using live, too! 🤣 Some of the guitars work well without IRs or Amp (Tube Pre or Flat), but each beast is a bit different. This will definitely be worth investigating on my end! Thanks again ^_^
The preset leveling is maybe the most important aspect one can deal with. I especially notice it when getting a preset from someone else, Their Gained scenes just about floored me, the level was so high. Now I know what they meant when someone said the sound man would be in SHOCK. I was using the output block but with have to try the preset leveling tool. I do notice that after a couple hours playing, your ears are starting to play tricks on oneself, so it would be best to do leveling while on a fresh set of ears. The Goal is unity gain, no monstrous changes. This is a GREAT VIDEO for sure!!!! Thanks a MILLION, now a subscriber. It is unreal 2.4K views and only 81 likes, HUH??? That Stinks.
Thank you! Gotta start somewhere ^_^
That Doubler Effect is Quite STUNNING. Sounds exactly like 2 players ala The Beatles Nowhere Man.
Thank you! Works really great in a pinch ^_^
I'm always impressed by how folks like you can research and hear the differences in these tones and bring out the true sound that I think was probably intended when these amps were released. I'm looking for a Thin Lizzy kind of Boys are Back in Town sound. I think you are getting there. I couldn't do it but maybe you can or know of a preset that captures it.
Oh, thank you! I took a lot of cues from the Leon Todd video about this one, in particular. There's also amazing write-ups on the Fractal Wiki (Amp Model List) that are an absolute godsend, & a true wellspring of knowledge! Equipboard is also pretty invaluable, giving a list of all of the noted gear these legends used. I feel like an archaeologist at times! I'll actually be making a preset of that one within the next month or so, as I'm sitting in with a band that plays that tune. While the harmonies aren't exactly parallel thirds, I'm sure I can come up with a way to use the Pitch block to give us those guitarmonies. (As far as the amp sounds, I believe that one is a Les Paul into a JCM 900 head with a 1960B cab. He also dabbles in ENGL amp heads.) A lot of it is learning what kind of guitar, amp, & cab/mic choices they used live or in the studio, as those will have the biggest impacts on the overall sound. The rest is all tweaking to taste.
HOW MANY HOURS??!
“Yes” 🤣 • 1-2hrs for the click (synced to my favorite performance) • Score arranging was 2-3hrs/part • Recording audio/video was 20min-6hrs per part (Clarinet solo was 2.33 days, at 8hrs a piece) • Reamping is the length of each segment • Mixing was a few hours for each draft (3) • Dialing in the Reverb to match Orchestra Hall (in MN) took 90min • Editing each individual video took 2hrs • Final editing took 3 full 18hr days (Each rendering took 5.5hrs for the main section, 4-5 drafts) • Opening titles took 30-40min to record, 45min to edit video/text • End credits’ second draft* - 1hr for text, 1hr for aligning videos at 50% speed • All info/tags/descriptions took less than an hour to write. Thumbnails took 5min to create per photo (several renderings). • Filing a copyright took 5-10min. • Setting up Bandcamp merch with scores, audio, etc. took 30min. Soooooo approximately 190hours, excluding all practice & prep time 😅
Wow! Sounds fantastic. Great job.
Thank you, Michael! A true labor of love here ^_^
Very useful
I’m happy to hear that! Very different approaches from our modern sensibilities, but necessary to get “the sound” ^_^

Aw thank you! I’m happy to hear this was helpful to you. Never know when your outboard gear needs to be used in tandem with the Fractal!
What a great tutorial. Thank you !
Thank you, Kevin! These devices are so powerful, & I love sharing what I learn as I unlock their full potential (also helps ME learn what I’m doing) ^_^
Excellent news. Can’t wait to try the bass pack! Appreciate your dedication and talent in doing this.
Thanks, Brett! I appreciate the kind words 🙏🏻 I’m happy to hear it! Hoping it starts a trend for more bass materials in the Fractal world, one little inch at a time ^_^
Hows the tone of this one in live setting Do You recommend it that the analog or other competitors such as Helix and Quad Cortex?
I have really loved this setup live over the last couple of years (almost exclusively)! The bands are happy, sound guys love it, & I feel really comfortable with it. I can’t speak for the Quad Cortex’s bass capabilities, but my friend Ian (Allison) uses the HX Stomp & absolutely adores it. While it has way more bass-specific options, there’s so much tweakability in the Fractal system to make any FX bass-specific & the bass amps they do have work incredibly well!
If you’re buying a unit for bass only, HX Stomp is probably the way to go. If you already have a Fractal for guitar, no need to buy another unit for bass. Definitely gets the job done! I play live & record bass with it on a weekly basis.
@@guitarguru186 thank you so much, but honestly right? FRACTAL HAS MORE REALISTIC TONE THAN HELIX?
I personally find it easier to dial in with the Fractal, but I’ve also heard amazing tones out of Helix & Quad Cortex. What it really boils down to (in my opinion) is: User Interface, Customer Support, Update Capability & Rollouts, & Community. In this way, I vote Fractal every day.
Thank you Alex. Looking forward for the upcoming videos. Keep up the good work. Cheers
Thank you, Nelson! 🙏🏻
Is it possible to use L of I/O 3 for one effect and R of I/P 4 for another? Both in mono and operate them independently and put them in different parts of the signal chain? Or are L&R of each I/O always tied together? I have a pretty complicated right that I'm trying to out together that uses a couple external switchers for pedals, but sometimes, I need to put the Fractal effects before pedals, after, before and after, and use 4cm at the same time and some other things. On top, I need to be able to split the signal from the guitar to another input in the Fractal to use the Fractal's noise gate. It's too complicated to explain but... If L/R for each I/O are always tied together and can't operate independently, that hoses my whole plan because there isn't enough stereo I/P for my needs. Not even the III rack unit would have enough I/O . :/
This is an incredibly fascinating conundrum you're working with, but I LOVE puzzles (especially rig-related ones)! The I/O sides are linked, to the extent of my knowledge, so I don't think you'd be able to split them in the particular way you're describing. However, I would really love to hear what you're trying to do & try to troubleshoot this stuff with you! Email me your rig (photos & descriptions, if possible), & I'll see what I can do to alleviate some of this for you: adm@alexmaiers.com

Haha may you rock ever harder on the forbidden song 😂
How you cut the input monitoring please ? Because when i choose "mute" for "output 1" in setup of fm3, there is no sound in out on the daw when i recording !
This happens in your DAW. Ex. In ProTools, hitting M on the track that’s armed to record so that you don’t hear that tone coming out of the monitors (it has significant latency). So you’ll hear the tone directly from your FM3 thru the speakers, as well as the track you’re recording to (but not the guitar track that is currently being recorded, as it has a significant latency to it). Hope that helps!
@@guitarguru186 thank you a lot ! I will see that ...
Thank you so much for all zour videos ! It's very interesting !

Great!!!!!
Thanks!
This is great. I actually appreciate this approach much more than “Here are my presets for you.” I’m actually learning something!
Thank you! I’m happy to hear it 🥹 The whole goal of the ToTs & F101s is to teach, not to sell. I’d honestly rather have people learn how to use their devices to their utmost & feel good about owning the gear they have. Twist the knobs themselves & hear what each does, ya know? “Knowledge earned is more valuable than knowledge given.” They also help me learn & be personally accountable for each topic (ex. Reamping with my FM3, I didn’t know until I shot the video about switching to USB Chn 3/4).
Beautiful. You nailed the beast

That sounds surprisingly good for a talkbox workaround! Great video
Thank you! Such an incredible system we have access to ^_^ Best I’ve been able to do (so far) without setting up the actual rig. So handy!
@@guitarguru186 I fully agree. Would love to have some more obscure effects or an LFO to modulate parameters in the QC, but oh well🤷🏻♂ Can't have everything
I’m not as familiar with the QC intricacies (I’ve only seen the UI be incredibly intuitive, & heard some great tones come out of it from bandmates’ rigs). I’ve had this tune setup to a sequencer & LFO for that TalkBox before, but it’s too finicky with starting in tempo (even with the envelope set to start it). You could even set it up to a momentary Control Switch if you don’t have an EXP Pedal. So many options!
Nice Thnx

No Les Paul?
Only Les Paul I have is an old Epiphone, so I didn’t have it on the first batch. It’s certainly on the list for the updates, just need a good Gibson to base it around & a day with it ^_^ Planning on borrowing one for a June/July update, along with a Gretsch. Any others I should consider?
Great preset. Thanks for sharing

morse + petrucci = epic
Ugh, just two of the absolute greatest (both are in my top 3 favorites, if that hasn’t been made obvious 😆). Thanks for watching, fellow Morse/Petrucci lover!
How do I record the processor and D.I signals in Reaper at the same time using FM3?
Excellent question, Daniel! If you're recording with your FM3 attached to USB: - Create a stereo track for your processed guitar (FM3 Input 1) - Create a mono track for your DI signal (FM3 Input 3)...make sure Input Monitoring is disabled for this. Note that the level of the DI signal will be much, much softer than the processed signal. Thanks to this reminder, I'll be making a video on this topic for next week (been meaning to for a while). Hope this is helpful! *If you have further questions, page 34 of the Owners Manual is dedicated to tracking the DI signal via USB & goes more in-depth than I could here.
